Our History

In August 1879, Rev. Neander M. Woods, from Second Presbyterian Church in Norfolk, VA, came to Gloucester on a missionary visit and found ten or twelve families deeply interested in the Presbyterian Church. The Court House Presbyterian Church of Gloucester was organized shortly thereafter with 21 members on November 14, 1880. Annie Franklin Hughes, wife of George Hughes, donated one acre of land for the construction of a church in 1881. Construction started on a wooden church in 1882 as seen by a local news article from The Tidewater Liberal. A new brick church was constructed adjacent to the old one in 1930. In 1940, the Court House Presbyterian Church was dedicated as First Presbyterian Church. An addition was added to the rear in 1956, and the sanctuary reversed and enlarged in 1980. Another expansion was completed in 2008. In 2017 First Presbyterian Church left the Presbyterian Church (USA) and became Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church and a member of the Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians (ECO). The Rev. Douglas E. Nagel has been the minister since 2003.
